December, 1997

Sadly, Sampson passed over the Rainbow Bridge on December 4th. He was loved by all who knew him and will be greatly missed.

November 2001 Update from Sampson's family.

My boy Sampson has just been diagnosed with lung cancer. He has been with me since Myra Kelley dropped him off 4 years ago, to be a companion for my Maggie. He is my first boy, and the love of my life. His remaining time will be spent as happy as I can make it for him. I cannot put him through operations so will give him an extra healthy diet, supplements and all the love that is in me to give. I will let him bark to his hearts content, pull weeds until he drops, and snuggle with me all he wants for as long as he wants. So many of our Goldens die of cancer..........someday I hope we can get to the backyard breeders who pay no attention to health issues when breeding for profit. Maybe when they are dealt with, Goldens won't have to die before their time from this horrible illness, cancer.

Here's Sampson's update to his old family --
looks like everything is going just fine! March, 1998.

sammy.jpg (26583 bytes)I adopted Sped-o today; now known as Sampson. He stayed with me a week and a half to see if he, I and Maggie, my other Golden, would relate. It took about a week and they started playing and sleeping together and have become friends. In the beginning Maggie would head for the garage to hide when he came around, but she soon learned he was an OK kind of guy.

I was looking for a small submissive female golden like my Maggie as a companion for her but I got the exact opposite. He's 6 years old, Male and 95 pounds (on a diet now as we speak). Who's gonna argue with fate. Maggie picked him out over 2 other female dogs that stayed briefly and were petite and "needy". She knows what she likes!!!!!

sammy2.jpg (22117 bytes)Any way thanks to Myra Kelley for bringing the big guy over, being so helpful and putting no pressure on us. We appreciate all she has done to bring these two together. At the vets today he was noted to have some small cataracts, a sebaceous cyst, too much weight, and worn down front teeth from chewing fleas over a long period of time. That and despite the occasional Howl in the middle of the night has not deterred us.

In a poem Myra has called "Baggage" we are told that we must accept them as they come to us baggage and all. That is what we will do.

and, of course, Sampson

March, 1998 Update

Dear Family:

Finally got a chance to write to you and let you know how I am doing at my new home. I am having a wonderful time with my new sister Maggie and my new human. It took Maggie a little while to figure out who I was but we are the best buddies now. We play and wrestle. Now that I am a svelte 88 pounds ( I was 97), I don’t squash her so bad when we play. She used to call me Porko, now it’s Hey Dude!! I’m cool with that.

My new mom is still trying to figure out that Howling thing I do; It’s really impressive to her and Maggie and the Cat. When I first did it they all got up and left the room. Kinda scared them. Now they look up and say , “Aw, put a sock in it” and go back to sleep. Mom says “Why do you do that”?? I’ll never tell. I guess they’ve gotten used to my habits.

I found a gopher hole the other day and wow, it was like old times. I dug 'til I dropped. Never caught that pesky vermin but I sure had fun trying. My new house has a big yard front and back, all fenced so If I go out I won’t get into the road. Maggie & I have a doggy door so I can be in or out whatever. I love my couch; spend alot of time there when I’m not riding in the car, or at the dog park, or swimming at Spring Lake (on a leash of course).

I love my Cat, named Mouse. He sleeps wrapped around my head at nite. I never thought cats were cool, but this guy is different. He likes me!!! Mom is still trying to figure out my Hair. It goes all directions at once! Can’t seem to get it under control. People think I’m a big bear at first; then I bark (CAN I BARK!!) and then they know I am a dog. My health is ok; guess I have bum hips so mom has me on some new stuff that’s supposed to help. They don’t hurt, they just don’t do what I want sometime. Getting plenty of exercise to keep fit as a fiddle.

Gotta go, I hear the dog food bag opening, WANNA EAT!!!!

Love Sampson (aka Speedo)
