Rusty - A Wish Come True

Rusty joined our family about a year and a half ago and he has genuinely changed our lives! What a grand and wonderful dog!

He has been a true and loving companion for our daughter, Katie who continues to battle cancer and renal failure. He remains by her side to protect her when she is feeling ill, he licks her head to comfort her when she is resting and sits by her side in the car, head resting on her lap on our many trips to the hospital. He seems to know that this job as companion and protector are his. He has even been able to visit her several times during her stay at the hospital and has been a source of tremendous comfort and joy.

He adds laughter to our daily routine with his silly games and love for squeaky toys. He wildly flies over and down the hill in back of our house in search for the tennis ball – splashing repeatedly in the small stream for a cool bath. He could do this for hours. Periodically, his doggie race-course routines leave us in hysterics, but somehow he knows when we have had enough and it is time to calm down.

He loves to join us on our many trips to the ocean or mountain lakes splashing wildly in and out of the waves/lake after kids and sticks. He is a wonderful companion on these trips, behaving perfectly in the car. He has traveled with us to Dillon Beach, Mammoth Lakes, Santa Barbara, and on numerous camping trips in the Sierras and now we wouldn’t ever consider going on a trip again without him. Everywhere we travel, from hotels to lakeside, he receives compliments on his beauty and behavior. He even went sailing with us on a small 21 foot sailboat and he was the perfect sailor, minding his manners and following our commands. We plan to take him along again soon!

He has even made friends with Sammy the 12 year old Cocker who lives next door with Grandma, although periodically Rusty’s high energy level is a little exhausting for the elder dog. Grandma also loves to have him visit, because he is so patient and loving.

He has successfully captured the heart of every member of our family and our lives are better because of him!

Original - by Katie Bullard

I have always wanted a Golden, ever since I saw one down the street. This year I got cancer, and a program, called "Make a wish" foundation, told me I could make one wish. So I wished for a Golden Retriever. We emailed Roxanne Hill from NGRR and she called and said that she had a perfect dog for me. I went to meet him and that day we got him. He is my dog and I named him Rusty. We adopted Rusty on Nov. 9, 2000. He is golden, not blonde or red. His full name is Rusty Skiwalker Bullard. His foster name was Lenny but I thought that this name was perfect for him.

Now he has about a million toys and still wants more. He is trying to make friends with Sammy, our Cocker Spaniel, by licking him clean. Rusty often plays by himself to get attention. Every morning at about 7 am, he jumps on my bed and licks my whole head until I wake up. So that makes me want to wake up. I walk him, feed him, sleep next to him, and love him. Rusty is one year old. I say that he is very mellow for a puppy. Rusty is the best dog in the world!
