My husband, Gary, & I adopted a golden from you over two years ago. Gary and I had just moved to El Dorado county into a home with 5 acres of fenced yard - that just cried out for a dog. We inherited a dog with our new home, Shelby, a large shepherd/retriever mix but felt another dog was called for. So having spent much time volunteering in an animal shelter we decided to adopt rather than go with a puppy. We first met Preston at the Petco in Folsom. He is a beautiful red color - almost the same color as my hair! Still we knew we needed a special dog who like cats and would get on well with an older bossier dog.
Preston was such an easy going lovable, guy - we just knew he was our guy. NORCAL GRR in Sacramento were good enough to hold Preston for us while settled into our new home, then finally on July 14th Preston came home for the first time. I'll never forget the first few days with him - he was pure mischief itself. Preston was ~18 months old and was still very much a puppy at heart - just an 80 lb. puppy with no manners. It became clear quickly that training was a high priority. Still after 10 weeks of training his manners improved considerably. So much so that when we attended the GRR adoption reunion in late September - Jodie and Mike Jones didn't recognize him!
With his easy going nature Preston lets Shelby boss him around but they fast became firm friends and best buddies. He and Shelby chase each other round the yard and it's quite a sight to see, as Shelby isn't quite as quick as Preston so she grabs his tail and they take off together. He howls like no other dog I've even know when he's happy or just plain mischievous. Preston just loves company and won't sit next to you if he can sit on you! He doesn't play fetch or like water - but does love to hide things - you'd be amazed what we find hidden in the garden. Thanks to you all for giving us the opportunity to give Preston a home. He truly has enriched our lives.
