Buddy - A Blessing for our Family.

Buddy & Pals
Best Friends

by M. Harvey

We adopted Buddy from your organization a year ago. He was our third dog - we have a toy poodle and a mix Terrier / Chihuahua, which are both small lap dogs. We wanted a dog for our two little boys who are 5 and 6 years old. We wanted them to have a pet they could play with and love, care for and grow up with and we had heard that Golden's are wonderful family dogs.

Buddy was up for adoption because the people who had him didn't like him digging up their yard. These people were actually Buddy's second owners though we have no history of his life with his first owners. We thought that all we had to was give Buddy lots of attention and his digging days would be over. From the minute he got in to our car, he was a part of our family. All four of us fell in love instantly with his smile, his tail wagging and the expressions he makes with his rolling eyes. He became an instant best friend to our little dogs and with the cat.

At night when the boys to go bed, Buddy will crawl right up there with them, although he prefers them to sleep on the floor or on the one bed-he likes to have one whole bed to himself.

Some nights he sleeps in our room on the floor at the bottom of our bed and some nights he comes out and climbs up on the couch and sleeps on his back with his legs up in the air.

Once I was sick in bed for a few days and for every night that I was sick Buddy came over and slept next to me on my side of the bed. Once I was well, he went back to his old sleeping habits. I don't know how he knew I was sick but he did.

Buddy has become best friend and guardian to our boys. When the boys play in the fenced in front yard Buddy stays out to guard them. He rolls around in the grass with them, plays ball with them -- though they hate it when he gets the ball because he will never surrender it.

He has been a pillow for our sleepy little boys, including our 2 year old grandson. He will lay patiently and quietly until they wake up.

Buddy adopted one of the kids Scooby-Doo slippers for his own. He carries that slipper around for hours. If he lays down, he has the slipper next to him. Whenever we have a guest, Buddy brings him the slipper and drops it on the guests lap. If he can't remember where he left his slipper he finds a sock or some other slipper to use as a welcome gift. It seems to be is way of showing people they accepted here.

Buddy also does what we call his butt-dance. He loves to have his back rubbed so if he gets the urge he will come over and turn his butt toward our legs and back up until he bump his back end on our legs. He will hop from back foot to back foot until we scratch his back. When he sees his brush he immediately drops down and lays on his back and wants his chest brushed.

He loves to sit and put his head on our knee and thinks he is our favorite dog. If one of the small dogs is on our lap, he will come over, stick his nose under them and flip them in to the air and off our laps.

In the year we have had Buddy I have only seen him mad once. He saw or heard something in our yard and growled. We were surprised to hear him do that. It's not that Buddy is quiet-he is rarely quiet. He grumbles and mutters and barks with joy when he is happiest. He is so even tempered and easy to please that he never gets upset or angry.

We say every day that is a blessing Buddy for our family.

He is a perfect pet and a loyal, loving friend to all of us. We have Buddy-hair on the carpets and on the couch, I have had the navy blue velour back seats in our suburban covered in dog hair and I don't care. We don't even care about the holes he has dug all over our back yard! To us, Buddy is worth every inconvenience he causes. We wouldn't have it any other way.

If a house without dog hair and a yard without holes means a house without Buddy, we do not want to live there!
