Dahlia's arrival at Fickle Hill Old Rose Nursery

Dahlia in her bed.

by Steve Catton

Dahlia came to live in our garden this past Thanksgiving (November 1999). She was the very first placement by the new local golden retriever rescue network person, Stasia Walters, who happens to be a rose customer of Cindy's and knew this place would be ideal for her.

Dahlia had been neglected in that she'd not been fed well and was infested with fleas and ear mites. Stasia had been giving her medicine for this, and she was already looking and feeling much better. She'd been left at home alone in a tiny kennel much of the time with not enough loving attention so that she'd run off (understandably enough) when given the slightest opportunity. She's never shown any sign of wanting to run off from here. Indeed, she seemed totally content and eager to take up residence here in every way from the get go.

We like to think that Dahlia is the reincarnation of our previous beloved golden retriever, Sadie, who'd died a little over two years before, at the age of thirteen. Not only is Dahlia approximately the right age [we're actually not certain of her age, but Stasia told us the vet had estimated two years old] to be Sadie reincarnate, but she behaved immediately as though she'd always known us and she seems also to possess Sadie's disposition and nobility.

Dahlia's favorite thing to do is to go for walks in the Arcata Community Forest just up the hill from our Nursery, or just down the hill at the Arcata Marsh and Bird Sanctuary by Humboldt Bay. As with Sadie, and, in truth, probably most golden retrievers, it is heaven for her with all of the smells, sounds, and sights of water, wetlands, and waterfowl. A sunset romp at the beach is right up there on her list too.
