We have always been a house with many animals, but the stars have always been two golden retrievers. We lost our beloved Golden , Boomer, to cancer when he was ten. Our other Golden, Bogie seemed so sad and missed her companion greatly. After a few months, one of the kids said that maybe it was time to start searching for another Golden.
We had never worked with a Rescue organization, but Bogie could have been a Rescue dog as she had 3 different homes before she came to us from our vet. It was clear that the Norcal Golden Retriever Rescue organization was going to help us find a great dog!
I got a call saying that there was a 2 year old male dog in the pound up in the Gold Country foothills that had been turned over to Norcal Golden Retriever Rescue. He was found wandering in the foothills, and no one knew how long he had been lost. I put Bogie in the car and we drove up to meet him. I wanted to make sure that he and Bogie would get along well.
When we first met this dog, I was struck by the color of his beautiful eyes - almost an amber color! But he was pretty dirty and acted somewhat scared and skittish. But I brought him home and took him to the vet, who found two ear infections, a respiratory infection and an infected paw! No wonder he was acting skittish! With lots of medicine in tow, I took him then to a dog groomer, who found lots of dirt, ticks and fleas.
Nevertheless, once I brought him home, he looked and acted like a completely different dog! He is gorgeous! We decided name him Chester after the Golden Retriever in the great movie, "The Kid".
Chester and Bogie are great friends now. Chester is the king of the house and gets all kinds of special treatment from the two kids. Some of the things we particularly like are when he lies down and crosses his paws, like a "well mannered gentleman." And he is a very verbal dog, especially when we first get home or when we are petting him and playing with him! The kids call him "Wiggle-butt" and he makes so much noise, we think he is actually talking to us!
We can't imagine what our life would be without our Chester now! We just celebrated our first anniversary with him in our family and look forward to many more years with him. We are so grateful to the Norcal Golden Retriever Rescue Organization for bringing him into our life!
