![]() Annie & "Sister" Lexie |
by Angela Zumsteg
Found starving and eating woodchips, I picked Annie up from her Foster within the week. She was first estimated to be 6-9 years old, was a total mess, had nails curled under, and only weighed 41 lbs. I have always had a Golden and a yellow Lab for over 20 years. My 12 yr. Lab died last November and since then I had this picture in my head of a red Golden called Annie in the redwoods. In March my nearly 14 year old Golden, Molly, died . (She came to me from Norcal as an 8yr old.) Although I have many cats, my house was empty. Even the cats missed the dogs! Then I adopted a young Lab.
Although her name was originally Annie, this was not THE Annie, so her name was changed to Lexie. No signs of Annie! How would Annie ever find me? I got on every list I could find and spent many hours on the internet. I nearly got a red Golden twice, but their names were not Annie and something always came up! I finally gave up! This was about the day that THE Annie, MY Annie, was found, because 4 days later I got home and there was a message on my machine to say " I think we have a dog for you. Her name is Annie"!
I picked her up on a Saturday with Lexie. She'd been tested and everything came back negative. So I rushed down to the Vet to get her Heartguard tabs and ear-mite medication, and then we went home! That was at the end of August. Latest estimate , she is 9-12 years old.
Although she had been initially groomed to get the worst off, I managed to get the "Loofah" matting off her tail in 3 hours. She now weighs 67+ lbs. and her hair is growing back! Even Lexie has gone from 31 to 57 lbs! Annie is SO wonderful!!!!! She walks around the dog park (9 acres down by the river) and never even thinks of running off. She loves Lexie and the cats and they all love her. Unfortunately, I recently deducted that she had obviously had her vocal chords cut at some point ! What a horrible and cruel thing to do! She is my silent Annie. Since I got her on PAAWS suppliment for Seniors she's even started to trot about. She has a really young looking coat and is looking more beautiful by the day. I have my Annie.
The funny thing is, amongst others which I haven't even mentioned here, that the person, Kathy, who found her eating those woodchips, had a dream that an Angel would come to save her Annie. My name is Angela.
4 1/2 months after adopting Annie, Annie had a massive Stroke, and we made one last trip to the Vet. Just two days before she'd been trotting around the Dog Park as usual and enjoying life. We will all miss her so much, but at least she got to experience a lot of love, happiness, and Doggie Chews before she had to leave this world. She was probably over 12 years old said the Vet. She's going to come back to me as a Puppy next time - just to make sure her next stay is a longer one!"
