When you adopt a dog,
please consider a

Golden Oldie

A large percentage of the dogs rescued by NORCAL GRR each year are over the age of 8, commonly discarded because they are considered too old or their owners didn't want them anymore. For most of these dogs, they have just reached middle age, and have a lot of life and love ahead of them. Imagine how you would feel if you were sent to the rest home at age 45. All of these dogs respond well to human companionship, and are very happy to have been rescued by NGRR. But they deserve more, much more. All dogs deserve to have a home where they are loved and can love, even the older dogs who may have had a hard life until now. Won't you consider adopting an older, experienced dog? Read the Top Ten Reasons to Adopt an Golden Oldie below, and think about why you contacted NGRR to adopt a dog.

Top 10 Reasons to Adopt a Golden Oldie

by Eleni Sotos

    1. Mellow Yellow!

Golden Oldies tend to be much more mellow, content, and well-adjusted. They don't need the same intense level of exercise that younger dogs do.

    2. Potty Trained!

More than 90% of older dogs are already housetrained. That means no unexpected "surprises" on the floor...

    3. Mature!

Most Golden Oldies are well beyond the destructive chewing and digging phases of doggie youth. That tends to mean no more chewed-up table legs or mammoth holes dug in the backyard!

    4. Companionship!

Unlike highly active younger dogs that need a lot of attention and fussing, Golden Oldies tend to revel in simple companionship with their families.

    5. Obedient!

Most Golden Oldies tend to be relatively obedient. Contrary to common belief, older dogs CAN learn new "tricks," particularly since they are more focused and have longer attention spans.

    6. Been There, Done That!

Many Golden Oldies have already been socialized to other animals and situations.

    7. Things are Under Control!

Since Golden Oldies tend to be calmer, they are less likely frighten children or the elderly by jumping up to greet them.

    8. Adaptable!

Older dogs tend to adapt more easily to household changes, such as visiting guests, being alone for longer periods of time, etc.

    9. An Open Book!

With a Golden Oldie, what you see is what you get -most of the dog's health and behavioral history is already known.

    10. It's a Good Thing!

Knowing that you're adopting a Golden that really needs and appreciates a new lease on life makes everyone - the dog AND the adoptive family, feel great!
