Puppy RockettRockett was born on Valentines Day in 1989. He came from a large litter and was the only one left when we went to pick one. I had not been told (when we arrived) he was the only puppy left for adoption, but I knew he was mine. The smaller of the bunch, he had an attitude about him. As I watched him mosey up to the water bowl, where he proceeded to push the other puppies away so he could get a drink, it was almost magic. I picked him up and somehow just knew he was for us.

SallyI carried him home in my hands when he was just 6 weeks old. Once in his new home, he was introduced to our other 3-month puppy Sally, a black lab rescue. Rockett took to Sally right away. Sally on the other hand was having none of it. Since Sally was larger of the two, she proceeded to spend the next few months whacking Rockett in the head with her paw or tossing him across the yard. Rockett took it all in stride, just waiting for the day when he was bigger than Sally. When that day came, he gave her a good what for and the two of them immediately bonded. After that Sally and Rockett could never be separated throughout their life together. When one went to the Vet for whatever reason, the other had to go just to be together. It was to be that way for the 10-½ years we were graced with being Rockett’s caretakers.

Rockett and his ballRockett’s favorite thing to do was go to the park early on Sunday morning and play ball. He lived for BALL, all day and all night. As long as you threw the ball, he would fetch it. It was almost as if he played chicken with you every time, to see who would quit first. Of course we did, just so he would stop. For the last four years Rockett was a diabetic, getting insulin shots twice a day. Never ever did he talk back or get angry about receiving those shots, as usual took it in stride. That was just the kind of dog he was.

Teenage RockettI had never owned dogs before Rockett and Sally came into my life….. And now I can’t imagine my life without them. He brought so much love and joy to both my husband and myself; we still struggle to get through his passing. Rockett passed away from cancer on October 5th this year. The cancer was sudden and took him before we had enough time to say our good-byes. I don’t believe we will ever get over not having Rockett with us….. but the memories he gave us for 10 ½ years will last us a lifetime. Now it is just Sally and us. Someday we will have another golden to love and who will love us…. Once we have said good bye to Rockett.

Smiling Rockett

I’ve always felt Rockett was special because he was born on Valentines Day… and now I know why…. He was the HEART of our family; we will miss him forever.
